Established around the sulphite mill founded in 1903, the port at Domsjö near Örnsköldsvik today serves the Domsjö Fabriker biorefinery on the Gulf of Bothnia. It is an industrial works port rather than a container facility, moving specialty dissolving cellulose (about 230,000 t/year), lignin (about 120,000 t) and bioethanol (about 20,000 t), plus the related forest feedstock and chemicals. Much of this traffic runs through the adjacent Hörneborg port, operated by Öviks Hamn och Logistik, with cellulose and lignin often feedered to Lübeck and onward to Asian markets. Rail tracks run directly into the mill site, so raw material arrives and finished goods depart by train. Shippers needing container or conventional breakbulk handling are better served by Sundsvall or Gävle. Domsjö thus stays a specialised industrial berth with a clear forest-products focus.
