Anyone routing container or project cargo to Qatar should know that this is no longer the country's working freight port. Until Hamad Port opened, the old Doha port handled the bulk of Qatar's general and container traffic, but all commercial container and bulk operations have since moved roughly 40 km south to Hamad Port, which serves as the national cargo gateway. Today Doha Port, run by Mwani Qatar, focuses on cruise tourism and limited general and livestock cargo. For containers, reefers or breakbulk, Hamad Port is the relevant call; Doha suits only niche consignments. Customs clearance for mainstream freight is processed through Hamad Port.
