Grain and oilseeds defined the throughput of Dnipro-Buzkyy sea terminal at the mouth of the Southern Buh near Mykolaiv, but commercial operations have been severely curtailed since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. On 17 July 2026 a Russian strike hit the port of Mykolaiv and killed two Ukrainian seafarers aboard a foreign vessel — one of the most serious incidents at the port since the war began. Ukraine subsequently cut its 2026/27 grain export forecast to 38–40 million tonnes (down from 43 million), and four of the country's largest grain terminals temporarily suspended purchases. No reliable scheduled liner or container handling is currently confirmed at Mykolaiv or Dnipro-Buzkyy; the terminal carries no registered UN/LOCODE, and its historical suitability is for bulk rather than boxed cargo. For grain and dry-bulk exports, shippers route through the Greater Odesa ports — Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi; the Danube ports Izmail and Reni, feeding onward to Constanța in Romania, remain an important alternative.
