Three deep-water berths and twelve ship-to-shore cranes give the Doraleh Container Terminal (SGTD) the muscle behind Djibouti's standing as the Horn of Africa's leading ocean-freight gateway. In 2024 the terminal moved 1,236,769 TEU, passing the one-million mark for the first time, against a rated capacity near 1.6 million TEU that is being expanded toward 1.8–2.5 million. The port lies on the Gulf of Aden close to the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, squarely on the Suez–Asia trunk route. Its defining advantage is hinterland: landlocked Ethiopia channels most of its foreign trade through Djibouti, served by the standard-gauge Ethio-Djibouti railway, currently the only line linked directly to SGTD. Beyond boxes, the Doraleh Multipurpose Port, an oil and bunkering terminal and dedicated bulk facilities handle breakbulk, vehicles, grain and liquid cargo. The Djibouti International Free Trade Zone supports transit, storage and re-export, making the port a practical consolidation point for the region. Reefer traffic, dangerous goods and project cargo follow established procedures along the Ethiopian corridor. Comparable alternatives in the area include Berbera in Somaliland and, for pure transhipment, the larger hubs of Jeddah and Salalah.
