Serving the industrial heartland of eastern Algeria, Djen-Djen (DZ DJE) is the region's main deep-water port, about 10 km from Jijel and 350 km east of Algiers. A multipurpose facility, it handles containers alongside general and bulk cargo such as grain, sugar, mineral fertilisers and timber. Its operations are closely tied to the nearby Bellara steel complex, importing iron ore and exporting finished steel products. Since 2009 the container terminal has run under a 30-year DP World concession. Annual throughput is roughly 100 vessels and 1.3 million tonnes. Lying less than 50 nautical miles from the Suez-to-Gibraltar trunk route, it offers short connections to Mediterranean services, with Béjaïa, Skikda and Algiers as regional alternatives.
