Despite sitting on a busy inland waterway between the Detroit River and Lake Erie, Detroit is not a container port; its strength lies in heavy bulk and project cargo. About 8.2 million tonnes move across its docks each year, with steel the most valuable commodity and iron ore the largest by volume, both closely tied to the region's automotive industry. The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority oversees 29 private and public terminals that work ocean-going 'salties' as well as Great Lakes 'lakers'. Stone, coal and cement round out the regular trades, but there is no scheduled liner container service here. Interstates I-75 and I-94 together with dense rail links give the docks excellent reach into the industrial Midwest. Shippers with boxes typically route through US East Coast gateways by rail, or use nearby Cleveland, the only container port on the Great Lakes.
