Delfzijl (UN/LOCODE NL DZL) is an industrial and chemical port in the northern Netherlands on the Ems estuary, the source of roughly 15% of all chemical products made in the country. It is run by Groningen Seaports, which together with its sister port Eemshaven handled about 13.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 (down from 14.1 million in 2023). Throughput is dominated by chemicals, salt, soda ash, dry bulk and breakbulk, with only modest container volumes. Reached through tide gates (sea locks), Delfzijl connects to the hinterland by road, rail and inland waterway, including the Eemskanaal towards the city of Groningen. In 2024 chemical-recycling firm Circtec set up in Circulands, a new estate designed for fully circular industrial operation. For pure container handling or large deep-sea direct services, Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Emden in Germany are the nearest alternatives.
