Cement is what defines Degerhamn, a works port on the Baltic island of Öland where one of Sweden's earliest cement plants opened back in 1886. For decades the quay shipped out cement, including Anläggningscement grades meant for bridges and heavy structures, from a plant scaled to around 300,000 tonnes a year, roughly a tenth of operator Cementa's national output. Clinker and cement production were shut down on environmental grounds, but the warehouse and harbour were kept as a terminal, with material still ground and dispatched as cement. Channel and pier depths of about 6.4 to 6.5 m suit smaller bulk carriers rather than container ships. The site connects to the mainland over the Öland Bridge. For containers and general cargo, Kalmar across the water and the larger Baltic ports are the relevant options.
