Founded in 1901 as a supply point for Interior gold mining, Deering today is a small Iñupiat community on a gravel spit where the Inmachuk River meets Kotzebue Sound. It has no built port: bulk fuel and large shipments arrive once a year by barge, run by Crowley and Northland during the brief July-to-mid-October navigation window. Served only by open-roadstead lightering, the village handles no commercial cargo or containers and holds no practical relevance for freight forwarders. Kotzebue, some 57 miles across the sound, is the regional reference, with onward supply via Nome and Anchorage.
