The concentrate first travels 100 kilometres by truck from Glencore's Raglan nickel-copper mine to Deception Bay, where it is stockpiled inside a storage dome before loading. From Québec City the concentrate continues by rail 950 kilometres to Glencore's smelter in Sudbury, Ontario, with the resulting nickel matte later shipped onward to the Nikkelverk refinery in Kristiansand, Norway. Deception Bay therefore functions not as a general cargo port but as a highly specialised mine-to-ship transfer point with no road connection to the rest of Canada.
