Leased for 99 years to the Landbridge Group since 2015, Darwin is Australia's northernmost deep-water port and its closest to South-East Asian markets. Today it functions mainly as an energy and bulk port, shipping LNG for the offshore oil and gas sector along with zinc and lead concentrate, plus live cattle and fodder. Container traffic does occur but stays modest at roughly 9,000 TEU a year, against a terminal capacity near 200,000 TEU, so Darwin should not be read as a container hub. The East Arm Wharf provides four berths along 865 metres of quay. Hinterland links run by road and by the railway south to Adelaide. For substantial container imports into Australia, Brisbane or Fremantle are far better suited, whereas Darwin's strengths lie in livestock, project and energy cargo.
