Rice and cotton once left Darien for the Atlantic in the 1820s, yet the port's real commercial peak came later: between 1870 and 1900 it was the leading yellow pine and cypress timber shipping point on the US East Coast. That trade faded, and since the 1940s Darien has functioned mainly as home port to a sizeable shrimp fleet rather than a cargo terminal. With a channel depth of only about 1.8 metres, the port (UN/LOCODE US DIE) on the Altamaha River suits fishing and small service vessels, not oceangoing merchant ships. Modern container, refrigerated, and bulk cargo for the region moves through the Georgia Ports Authority's deepwater terminals at Savannah and Brunswick instead. Shippers with freight interest in coastal Georgia should therefore plan around those two gateways rather than Darien itself.
