Dandong's role is defined by a border: sitting at the mouth of the Yalu River opposite North Korea, it is China's principal port for trade with its neighbour, far outweighing the 'Very Small' tag of older records. The port splits into the Langtou river harbour and the reclaimed Dadong sea port, handling dry and liquid bulk, containers, reefer and breakbulk — steel, coal, grain and fertiliser prominent among the cargoes.
