Western Australia's Pilbara exports through a handful of ports, and Dampier (AU DAM) moved 178.3 million tonnes of that trade in financial year 2025-26 — iron ore, LNG, salt and condensate, with no container role at all. Iron ore alone accounts for roughly 86 per cent of throughput, loaded at Rio Tinto's dedicated ore facilities. An AUD 565 million federal Pilbara programme, about AUD 115 million of it for Dampier, is funding a new bulk handling facility and a 57-metre link bridge to the existing cargo wharf, due fully operational in late 2026, while dredging to 11 m below chart datum ends tide-dependent berthing. Containerised or general cargo belongs at Fremantle near Perth; for additional Pilbara ore and project volumes, Port Hedland is the neighbouring option.
