Despite being labelled a port, Dampier is no container gateway: it is one of the world's busiest bulk export terminals, shipping iron ore, LNG, salt and condensate from Western Australia's Pilbara. Iron ore accounts for roughly 86 per cent of throughput, with Rio Tinto running dedicated ore facilities and Woodside recently exporting about 22.2 million tonnes of LNG a year via its Pluto and North West Shelf plants – around nine per cent of world exports. Together with neighbouring Port Hedland, Dampier underpins a large share of global iron ore trade. Inland movement relies on the miners' private heavy-haul railways rather than common-carrier rail. A AUD 565 million federal Pilbara programme is currently channelling about AUD 115 million into common-user port infrastructure at Dampier. The port is not suited to containerised or general cargo, for which shippers use Fremantle near Perth. For project and heavy-lift consignments tied to Pilbara resource projects, however, Dampier offers well-developed industrial handling.
