Grain and cement are the cargoes that keep Crotone working, a dry-bulk port on the Ionian coast of Calabria. Its commercial basin, the Porto Nuovo, offers around 1,900 metres of berths at 8–10 metres depth backed by roughly 50,000 m² of yards; about 87 percent of throughput is bulk, with some 11 percent breakbulk and a small share of dangerous goods. This is an industrial bulk port rather than a container terminal — there is no scheduled boxship service. The older Porto Vecchio, shallow and narrow-mouthed, mainly serves the fishing fleet and leisure craft and keeps cold-storage cells for catch. Containers and transhipment in Calabria move through Gioia Tauro, while larger breakbulk and industrial volumes can route via Taranto. For grain, cement and bulk parcels in the Ionian Sea, however, Crotone is a usable direct call.
