Crofton (CA CRO) was only ever as busy as its mill: for decades this Vancouver Island berth in the Cowichan Valley existed to serve the local pulp and paper plant. Commissioned in 1957, the deep-sea facility shipped pulp and paper to North America, Asia and Latin America, and latterly even took in imported wood chips to keep the lines fed. In early December 2025 the operator (Paper Excellence/Domtar) announced the mill's permanent closure, ending its regular pulp and paper sailings. Current commercial cargo relevance is therefore minimal and not confirmed, and the port never handled containers or public breakbulk in the first place. Shippers on Vancouver Island should look to Nanaimo or Chemainus, while containers and liner connections run through the Port of Vancouver.
