Coveñas is best understood not as a cargo harbour but as the seaward end of Colombia's crude-export system. Sitting in the Gulf of Morrosquillo, the facility loads crude oil and naphtha through three single-point mooring buoys (the TLU units) located about 12 kilometres offshore, fed by the 745,000-barrel-per-day OCENSA pipeline from the Cusiana and Cupiagua fields. Tankers load at anchor over depths of roughly 23 metres; there are no container quays, no general-cargo berths and no break-bulk or dangerous-goods handling of the usual kind. Hinterland access runs through the pipeline network rather than road or rail, which makes the terminal irrelevant for boxed or palletised freight. Shippers needing containers, project cargo or routine customs clearance should route through Cartagena or Barranquilla instead. Coveñas remains a single-purpose energy export node on the Caribbean coast.
