Once the principal port of entry into Upper Canada, Coteau-du-Lac today handles history rather than freight. The village on the north shore of Lake Saint Francis, about 50 km southwest of Montreal, was home to North America's first lock canal, built in 1779 beside a British fort and now preserved as a National Historic Site. Modern Seaway vessels pass close by, but commercial loading and discharge take place at Salaberry-de-Valleyfield or Montreal, not here. For forwarders the place has minimal cargo relevance and is best treated as a landmark on the Seaway rather than a working terminal.
