Cellulose, wood chips, sawn timber, coal and chilled produce make up the bulk of what moves through Coronel, on Chile's Gulf of Arauco about 30 km south of Concepción. Opened in 1996 as a breakbulk outlet for forest products, the port now handles roughly 2.5 million tonnes a year across four piers. Its container terminal runs two berths with capacity for about 250,000 TEU annually, while a mechanised coal jetty rated at 2,500 tonnes per hour can serve Panamax bulkers up to 85,000 dwt. Dedicated berths also accommodate general cargo, tanker, gas and reefer vessels. Road and rail links connect Coronel with Concepción and the wider Biobío hinterland. For added liner choice, shippers also use neighbouring San Vicente, Lirquén or Talcahuano, and San Antonio for the largest container flows.
