Around nine million short tons of coal a year set the scale at Conneaut, a dedicated bulk port on Lake Erie's Ohio shore handling iron ore and coal rather than boxes. The dock is the northern loading point from which iron ore moves by rail to steel mills in the Pittsburgh area, operated by the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company, part of Canadian National. It was here, around 1900, that the Hulett ore unloaders were pioneered. Throughput has eased with the long decline of US steel. No container, breakbulk or customs services run here. General and containerised cargo for the region goes through the Port of Cleveland instead.
