Once called Angostura, Ciudad Bolívar sits on the south bank of the Orinoco some 241 nautical miles upriver and acts as the trade gateway for eastern Venezuela's river basin. Its five wharves stretch about 730 metres and were built for river barges and small coastal cargo ships rather than ocean tonnage. Usable draught is highly seasonal, falling to roughly 4.8 m in the dry season (December–May) and rising to about 9 m when the river is high. Exports centre on cattle, hides, gold and fruit, while inbound cargo covers construction equipment, raw materials, metal products and foodstuffs, handled as breakbulk, dry bulk and project loads. There is no established container line service; hinterland distribution runs mainly by road, with the Orinoco itself as the inland waterway. For deep-draught vessels and containers, Puerto Ordaz (Ciudad Guayana) downstream and the ocean ports of Puerto Cabello and La Guaira are the realistic alternatives.
