Around 4.37 million tonnes of cargo crossed the quays of Cirebon (ID CBN) in 2014, of which roughly 3.08 million tonnes was coal. This multipurpose port on the north coast of Java is dominated by dry and liquid bulk – coal and liquid asphalt above all, alongside sand, clinker, cement, gypsum, palm oil (CPO) and biodiesel – serving the West Java hinterland. It is operated by PT Pelindo Multi Terminal, a subsidiary of the state operator Pelindo. Container traffic, by contrast, is marginal; Cirebon's profile is firmly that of a bulk and breakbulk port. Hinterland distribution runs mainly by road into West Java. Shippers needing container or reefer services use Tanjung Priok in Jakarta or Tanjung Emas in Semarang.
