Operated over the years by companies including IIAPCO, Maxus, Repsol and CNOOC, the Cinta Oil Terminal is an offshore crude-export facility in the Java Sea, north of the Sunda Strait. It exists purely to lift crude oil: production from the Southeast Sumatra block – including the Cinta field, discovered in 1969 – is held on the floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) Lentera Bangsa and transferred to tankers via four single buoy moorings in about 21 m of water. Roughly 20 tankers totalling around 1,700,000 dwt are handled each year. The terminal lies within a restricted area and offers no container, general-cargo or conventional customs handling. Shippers with containers or breakbulk for West Java use Tanjung Priok in Jakarta instead.
