Where the warm Kuroshio and cold Oyashio currents meet off Cape Inubō, Choshi works one of Japan's richest fishing grounds at the mouth of the Tone River in Chiba Prefecture. Landings reached around 236,000 tonnes in 2022, spanning some 200 species including bonito, sardine and mackerel, which makes fishing — not container or general cargo — the harbour's core business. The city pairs this with a long-established soy-sauce industry rooted in local maritime trade. As a natural river harbour with limited depth, Choshi is not configured for large boxed or bulk shipments. Hinterland links run by road and rail to Chiba and the Greater Tokyo area. For commercial container, bulk or industrial cargo, forwarders turn to the nearby industrial port of Kashima or to Chiba and Tokyo/Yokohama.
