More than 30 berths and a handling capacity cited at around 12 million tonnes a year make Ch'ongjin (KP CHO) one of the larger ports on North Korea's Sea of Japan coast. It functions chiefly as an outlet for the surrounding heavy industry, shipping iron, steel, fish and soybean oil, with bulk and breakbulk metals, coal and chemicals dominating the quays. The facilities are tightly linked by rail to nearby steelworks, including the Kim Chaek complex and the Chongjin Structural Steel Works.
