A record 3,531,113 TEU passed through Chittagong (Chattogram, BD CGP) in fiscal year 2025/26, up 7.1% on the previous year and equal to roughly 90 percent of Bangladesh's seaborne trade. The river port on the Karnaphuli near the Bay of Bengal is the outlet for the country's ready-made garment industry outbound, and for machinery and industrial raw materials inbound. Its largest facility, the New Mooring Container Terminal, has been run by state-linked Chittagong Dry Dock Limited since 2025 and posted its best-ever month in May 2026 with 126,496 TEU. Alongside it work the Chittagong Container Terminal and the Patenga Container Terminal, operated by RSGT Bangladesh (Red Sea Gateway) since June 2024 with capacity of about 250,000 TEU a year, scalable to 450,000; all 14 of its hybrid cranes were running by late 2025. Besides boxes the port handles bulk grain, cement and fertiliser. River draught caps vessel size, so many services reach Chittagong via transshipment hubs such as Singapore, Colombo or Port Klang instead of direct mainline calls. Inland distribution runs mainly by road and rail toward Dhaka, supported by delta river barges, with congestion on access roads and in customs a recognised bottleneck — shippers should budget realistically for demurrage and detention. For urgent or oversize consignments, Mongla and the emerging Matarbari deep-sea project are the practical alternatives.
