Shallow water defines Chinde: a channel of only about 1.8 metres leads to its estuary harbour on a distributary of the Zambezi delta, and there is no regular commercial navigation on the Zambezi itself. Opened in 1889, the town was once the main entry point for goods and passengers into British Nyasaland, exporting copra and sugar, but it declined after Beira's railway expanded around 1907 and a 1922 cyclone. Today Chinde is chiefly a fishing centre with limited freight relevance. For containerised or conventional foreign-trade cargo, Beira, Quelimane and Nacala are the ports to use.
