Despite the name, the town of Chicoutimi no longer operates commercial quays; all cargo for the area now moves through the Grande-Anse marine terminal at La Baie, the maritime arm of Port Saguenay. The terminal sits about 54 nautical miles up the Saguenay River from its confluence with the St. Lawrence and acts as the import-export access for the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. Traffic is weighted toward bulk and breakbulk — aluminium, forest products and solid and liquid bulk tied to mining and heavy industry — with 3.48 million tonnes handled in 2024. A 286-metre berth with roughly 13.8 metres of depth lets Grande-Anse handle vessels of more than 100,000 deadweight tons; a wharf rehabilitation completed in 2026 further increases capacity for Panamax-class vessels. The federal and Quebec governments are investing CAD 111.2 million in a Mechanized Multi-User Bulk Transport System (automated conveyor) expected to raise throughput by up to 15 percent. An adjacent intermodal terminal links the quay to rail and the national highway network; for container liner services, Québec City and Montréal are the nearest alternatives.
