Inaugurated in 1970 to serve the now-defunct Gaspésia pulp and paper mill, the wharf at Chandler on Québec's Chaleur Bay lost its original purpose when the mill closed in 1999. The site connects inland via Route 132 along the Gaspé coast, with no consistent rail service, and customs matters are handled through Canadian federal authorities as at any Québec port. Recreational fishing for smelt and mackerel from the wharf underlines its largely local, non-commercial present-day use; shippers seeking reliable cargo capacity on this coast should look to the ports of Gaspé or Matane instead.
