Opened in November 2024 some 78 km north of Lima and in full commercial operation since June 2025, Chancay (PE CHY) is a deep-water megaport with four berths – two for containers, two multipurpose – a 1,500 m quay and a 16 m draft. COSCO Shipping Ports holds 60 percent and the mining group Volcan the remaining 40 percent, with the first phase costing about USD 1.3 billion. It moved roughly 286,000 TEU in its first year against a design capacity of about 1 million TEU, 6 million tonnes of bulk and 160,000 vehicles a year. Its depth lets container ships of more than 18,000 TEU call where other ports on South America's west coast cannot. A direct service links Shanghai and Chancay, cutting transit to China to about 23 days. That makes the port a Pacific gateway from South America to Asia, geared to containers, copper and farm exports and vehicle imports. Hinterland access currently runs by road, with further road and rail projects planned. For established volumes, Callao remains Peru's main multipurpose port, while San Antonio in Chile is an option further south.
