Chabahar is Iran's only deep-water ocean port, deliberately placed on the Gulf of Oman beyond the Strait of Hormuz, under UN/LOCODE IR ZBR. Two terminals share the traffic: Shahid Beheshti, run by India Ports Global since 2018, and Shahid Kalantari. Container volumes reached roughly 60,000 TEU in 2024 — up more than 500 percent on 2022/23 but from a low base — with the cargo mix leaning toward bulk and breakbulk, including wheat for Afghanistan. A ten-year India-Iran agreement signed in May 2024 pledged about USD 120 million in direct investment plus a credit line, targeting up to 500,000 TEU of capacity within a decade. Strategically the port anchors the International North-South Transport Corridor toward Central Asia and Russia, and the Chabahar–Zahedan railway is due to link the national network in mid-2026. In 2025, however, Washington revoked the port's sanctions waiver, further thinning the international liner network. For mainstream container moves out of Iran, Bandar Abbas (Shahid Rajaee) remains the larger option, while cargo from India can route via Mundra.
