Once a container gateway, Catania has handed box traffic to nearby Augusta and now thrives on ferry, RoRo and conventional breakbulk trades on Sicily's east coast. For pure container cargo, Augusta is the first choice; for transhipment, mainland Gioia Tauro, complemented by Palermo in the west of the island.
