A sheltered natural basin with roughly 7.9 metres in the channel and a cargo pier of about 4.9 metres, Catalina Harbour (CA CAT) is built for fishing vessels rather than freighters. A federal Small Craft Harbour under Fisheries and Oceans Canada, it sits beside the historic union town of Port Union on Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula and long served a fish-processing plant handling groundfish and later shrimp until operations wound down after Hurricane Igor in 2010. The harbour has no container handling or scheduled commercial cargo service, so its freight role is essentially limited to the regional inshore fishery. Containerised and general cargo for Newfoundland moves through St. John's, which Oceanex links to the Canadian mainland.
