Two basins define Cartagena on Spain's south-east coast in Murcia: the city basin, with the container terminal at the Santa Lucía quay, and the industrial Escombreras basin. Escombreras concentrates the region's energy and chemical flows around the Repsol refinery — crude oil (about 14.9 million tonnes in 2024), refined products, LPG and chemicals — alongside the Enagás LNG terminal, operating since 1989 with five tanks holding some 587,000 m³. It also handles solid bulks such as grain, ore, cement, clinker and fertilizers. Liquid bulk reached about 25.9 million tonnes in 2024, roughly three quarters of total throughput of more than 35.6 million tonnes (the port's third-best year), placing Cartagena second in Spain after Algeciras for liquid bulk. A new biofuels plant in Escombreras has recently drawn extra volumes of oils and fats, while the Príncipe Felipe quay is being expanded for LNG handling. Container volumes are growing but remain secondary to the energy business. The Murcia agricultural hinterland is linked by road and rail. For pure container shipments many shippers turn to Valencia or Algeciras.
