Clearance runs through Colombia's DIAN customs authority, and several free-trade zones (Zonas Francas) at the port allow duty-deferred storage and processing. Hinterland distribution is mainly by road, with long-haul links to Bogotá and Medellín; rail plays only a minor role for containers. Alternatives include Barranquilla and Santa Marta on the Caribbean and Buenaventura on the Pacific coast.
