Roughly 100 kilometres up the west bank of the San Juan River sits Caripito (VE CAR), a port built for a single purpose: oil. The Creole Petroleum Corporation laid down storage and a deep-water pier here in 1929, and the first tanker sailed in 1930 carrying 20,000 barrels to Trinidad. It remains an energy and tanker terminal handling crude and petroleum products – not containers or general cargo – with berths 2 and 3 taking vessels of about 230 m LOA, 61,000 DWT and 10.3 m draught. Road and rail tie the terminal to the town of Caripito and the oil-bearing hinterland of Monagas state. Throughput tracks the fortunes of Venezuela's oil sector under PDVSA and has at times been heavily curtailed. Shippers needing container or breakbulk service should look to Guanta/Puerto La Cruz or the José terminal.
