Between 6,000 and 8,000 tonnes of fish, worth CAD 30–50 million a year, cross the wharf at Caraquet, one of New Brunswick's principal fishing ports on the Acadian Peninsula. Home to a large Atlantic fishing fleet, a fisheries school, boatbuilding yards and fish-, crab- and oyster-packing plants, the harbour sits on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Its roughly 260 m of mooring face (165 m West and 91 m East pierhead) is reached by a 5.5 m channel and occasionally receives tugs, barges and small bulk carriers. Containerised and international line services are not part of the picture. Shippers use nearby Belledune for bulk and Saint John or Halifax for containers.
