Salt and gypsum from the nearby Lake MacLeod deposit make up almost all the tonnage shipped through Cape Cuvier, a privately operated deepwater loading port about 70 km north of Carnarvon in Western Australia's Gascoyne region. The operation moves roughly 1.5 mtpa of salt and around 1 mtpa of gypsum, the latter exported mainly to customers in Australia and Southeast Asia, for some 2.5 million tonnes a year in total. A single shiploader on a timber jetty, with a slewing and luffing conveyor boom, serves berths at about 17.8 m depth. The port offers no container, customs or general-cargo handling; it is purely a dry-bulk export terminal. Formerly part of Rio Tinto's Dampier Salt, the Lake MacLeod business was sold in 2024 to Leichhardt Industrials Group for A$375 million. For containers or mixed cargo in the region, forwarders use Geraldton or Fremantle further south.
