Once a busy railroad port, Cape Charles today handles almost no commercial freight. Founded in 1884 as the terminus of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad, it barged loaded rail cars on car floats across Chesapeake Bay until the service ended in 2018. With channel and pier depths of only about 3 to 5 metres, this Eastern Shore harbour in Virginia is unsuited to container or deep-sea cargo and now serves mainly marina and recreational traffic. Forwarders moving freight in the region use the deep-water ports of Norfolk and Hampton Roads nearby.
