Despite the name, Canaport is not a container or general-cargo port but one of Canada's principal energy gateways on the Bay of Fundy. Sited at Mispec Point about 9 km southeast of Saint John, New Brunswick, it opened in 1970 as the Western Hemisphere's first deep-water crude terminal capable of receiving supertankers via a single-point mooring. The crude terminal feeds the adjacent Irving Oil Refinery, Canada's largest. Immediately to the east, the LNG terminal began importing and regasifying liquefied natural gas in 2009 — Canada's first such facility — and has been wholly owned by Spanish energy group Repsol since 2021, when Irving Oil sold its 25 % stake; Repsol has since renamed it Saint John LNG (formerly Canaport LNG). With channel depths near 23 m, the site handles only liquid energy cargoes — crude oil and LNG — and offers no container, breakbulk or RoRo services. Forwarders moving boxes or general cargo should route through the DP World container terminal at the Port of Saint John instead.
