River barges rather than ocean vessels move most cargo at Cametá, an estuary port on the west bank of the Rio Tocantins about 90 nautical miles above Belém. It handles regional farm produce and fishing — the area accounts for roughly 19% of the Tocantins catch — but offers no commercial container or deep-sea handling. The planned Tocantins-Araguaia waterway may one day channel soy, maize and minerals through here, though the river is not yet continuously navigable for large craft. International shipments from eastern Pará move through the deep-water terminals at Belém and Vila do Conde (Barcarena).
