India's only major riverine port, Calcutta (Kolkata) sits some 200 kilometres inland on the Hooghly, a distributary of the Ganges rather than an open-sea berth. Now styled Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, it runs as two systems: the city-side Kolkata Dock System and the seaward Haldia Dock Complex. In FY2023/24 the port set a record 66.4 million tonnes, about 49.5 million of them at Haldia alone. Container traffic exists but stays modest at roughly 0.65 million TEU, with expansion toward 1 million TEU planned. The defining issue is limited draught: the tidal Hooghly needs constant dredging, and Haldia's Western Channel averages only about 8 metres, so larger ships often lighter their cargo or work at anchor. Beyond boxes, the quays mainly handle dry bulk, liquid cargo, coal and project shipments for eastern India. The hinterland covers West Bengal, India's northeast and the landlocked states of Nepal and Bhutan, reached by rail and road. For deep-draught vessels and transshipment, shippers turn to Visakhapatnam or relay via Colombo and Singapore.
