About 10.5 million tons of limestone leave the Port of Calcite every year, shipped from what is the largest limestone quarry on earth near Rogers City, Michigan. Owned by Carmeuse Lime & Stone on the shore of Lake Huron, the port is a single-commodity bulk operation: limestone and aggregates only, with no container handling or general customs gateway. It is also the birthplace of the self-unloading vessel, a design the Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company pioneered so ships could discharge their own cargo onto the dock. Self-unloaders distribute the stone to steel mills, cement works and industrial docks throughout the Great Lakes, overwhelmingly in domestic US trade. Quarry conveyors and rail feed the cargo straight from pit to quay, so there is little classic hinterland trucking. Shippers with containers or mixed freight should look to diversified ports such as Cleveland or Detroit instead.
