On the western, black-sand shore of the volcanic island of Linosa, Cala Pozzolana di Ponente is the island's sole landing point in the Pelagie archipelago. Passenger ferries from Porto Empedocle and Lampedusa berth at a quay of around 80 metres that suits only small vessels. There are no commercial cargo terminals, container handling or customs clearance, so freight relevance is limited; the island is supplied via breakbulk carried on the ferry links. For actual freight shipments, Porto Empedocle in Sicily is the nearest commercial port.
