Laid out decades ago by Alcoa to ship bauxite, Cabo Rojo today operates as a private industrial port on the Dominican Republic's southwest coast in Pedernales Province. Its cargo terminal, now run by the Colombian firm Cementos Andino, exports bauxite, limestone and cement clinker; a test shipment of about 9,000 tonnes of bauxite sailed to Alabama in late 2020 as mining resumed. A quay draft of roughly 10.9 metres allows mid-sized bulk carriers to load.
