Butzfleth, the seaport of Stade on the Lower Elbe, handled about 5.5 million tonnes in 2024 — a 45% jump that lifted it to second place among Lower Saxony's seaports. The surge came from sharply higher ore imports for Aluminium Oxid Stade (AOS), the only alumina plant in Germany using bauxite digestion. Operated by Niedersachsen Ports, the southern basin handles liquid and gaseous feedstocks for the chemical industry, including resident producer Dow, while the northern quay moves bauxite, aluminium hydroxide and aluminium oxide. It is not a container port but an industrial and bulk facility, and a new southern-harbour jetty for liquefied gases is extending its energy-logistics role. Road, rail and the River Elbe inland waterway connect the site to the Hamburg region. Containerised consignments are best routed through nearby Hamburg.
