Operated by ORLEN Lietuva, Butingė is an offshore crude-oil terminal rather than a conventional quay-side port. A single point mooring (SPM) buoy roughly seven kilometres offshore handles tankers of up to about 150,000 dwt and feeds the Mažeikiai refinery through a dedicated pipeline. Annual throughput is designed for around 14 million tonnes of crude, with onshore tank storage exceeding 300,000 cubic metres. For forwarders the key fact is that only liquid cargo moves here, namely crude and petroleum products; there are no container, breakbulk or RoRo facilities. Inland distribution runs through the pipeline to Mažeikiai, not via general-cargo road or rail. Shippers needing containers or general freight should route through nearby Klaipėda, while Ventspils in Latvia is the regional alternative for oil transit.
