Burghead earned its keep on grain long before fish: the granaries ringing the basin recall a harbour built in its present form in 1818 as an import and export point on Scotland's Moray coast. Its later fame came from malting — the large maltings opened in 1966 once supplied roughly a third of the malted barley used by Scotch whisky distilleries. Seaborne trade today is modest and centred on the inshore fleet, whose squid and shellfish catches leave by road for east-coast markets. With an approach depth of only about 3.4 metres, the harbour cannot take larger cargo ships. For containers or general cargo, shippers use Inverness or Aberdeen.
