Bulk raw sugar out, molasses in: that two-way exchange defines operations at Bundaberg, a specialised agribulk port on the Burnett River in Queensland, about 365 km north of Brisbane. Raw sugar is stored in two large sheds and loaded by a travelling gantry, while molasses sits in three tanks and moves by pipeline. The Sir Thomas Hiley Wharf also handles gypsum, wood pellets, bulk liquids and silica sand; the John T. Fisher Wharf is dedicated to molasses imports. A new Common User Facility, named 2024 Bulk Handling Facility of the Year, loads at up to 2,000 tonnes per hour. With roughly 473,000 tonnes and just 26 vessel calls a year, this is a seasonal bulk terminal, not a container or general-cargo gateway. Boxed freight routes instead through Brisbane or Gladstone to the south.
