Around 13.7 million tonnes of cargo across more than 15 commodity types move through Bunbury (AU BUY) each year, confirming its role as Western Australia's leading bulk export port some 175 km south of Perth. Set in Koombana Bay and operated by Southern Ports, it runs seven berths across inner and outer harbours, with inner-harbour depths up to 12.2 m. Alumina is by far the largest single export, alongside mineral sands, silica sand, spodumene (lithium ore), copper concentrate, grain and woodchips bound mainly for Asia. Inbound trades include caustic soda, methanol, petroleum coke, fertiliser and fuels. This is a dry- and liquid-bulk facility rather than a container port, served by road and rail into the South West mining and refining region. Containerised and international liner cargo is handled instead through Fremantle.
